Maidenhead & District Table Tennis Association Closed Championships 2011

The 2011 Maidenhead Closed Championships took place over the weekend of 5th / 6th February at the Cippenham Table Tennis Centre. Although attendance was down this year, it was pleasing to see a good number of younger players.

The Men’s singles event on the Sunday produced two of the closed matches of the week end. Ramesh Gehlot was up against Mark Banks in the final. This proved to a very good five set match with the last set going to a 12- 10 conclusion in favour of Ramesh. Some seemingly impossible shots were returned in a fast game that was exciting to watch.

Not to be outdone, the Men’s singles Consolation final saw Father against Son, in another five set match. Mike started well, but let Chris back in the middle two sets, before finally taking the last to win 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 8-11, 11-4. A case of experience over youth?

Ramesh Gehlot and Mark Banks took the Men’s doubles trophy by defeating the younger pairing of Ben Cunningham and Anthony Gardener 11-6, 11-9, 11-6. However Ramesh did not get it all his own way, as he was defeated in the Premier Division Knockout by Ricky Hardcastle 12-10, 11-5, 11-6.

The number of Ladies taking part this year was down due to Injury, Illness and commitments elsewhere. However those taking part had a good time, with Wendy Porter taking the honours in the Ladies Single events and paired with Elena Cockrell the Ladies doubles event. The Ladies Singles Consolation was won by Elena Cockrell who defeated Lucie Bouron, a new comer to the Championships.

This year saw the return of the Junior Singles Event. This was played as a round robin, with Eddie Mitchell coming out on top, followed by Daniel Thorne as runner up.

As usual the concluding event on the Saturday was the charity drawn Handicap doubles. Each round saw different pairings of players, the winners going forward to the next round. In the final Elroy Hull and Bob Gates defeated Ben Cunningham and Dave Hyder. This year’s charity was Leukaemia Research.
